At Winches Online we are often asked about winches to pull your toys into the shed or garage. The most common query we get is something like this: "My boat weighs 2 tonnes, so do I need a 2 tonne winch?"

Winches are generally rated by their line pull capacity, meaning the weight the winch capable of lifting vertically as a dead weight of that capacity. So whilst your boat may weigh 2 tonnes, if you are just pulling it into the garage, you are not lifting it as a dead weight.

When putting a boat or caravan in the garage, it will usually be on a trailer or a carriage that transfers much of the weight to the ground with also makes this weight transportable on wheels as a rolling load. 

This means that a 2 tonne winch is probably overkill.

Having access to a quality winch system is crucial when using a boat ramp to launch your vessel. For safe and effective operation, it's important to select the correct winch model based on both the gradient of the boat ramp and also the weight of your boat and trailer combination. While some winch products are capable of working in a range of conditions, having access to the correct model and capacity rating will make it safer and easier for you to get on the water.
